Toyota is celebrating the sale of 799,738 sales on January 1st 2014 since first going on sale in Australia in 1971.
HiLux has been Australia’s leading commercial vehicle for the past 16 years in a row and the top-selling four-wheel drive vehicle for the past nine.
It is the only ute to have topped the monthly national sales charts – a feat it achieved twice last year – which helped it claim overall third place in 2013 with 39,931 sales.
The first HiLux, a 4×2 variant, arrived in Australia in 1971 through then national distributor, Thiess Toyota. HiLux 4×4 variants have been even more popular since arriving in 1980.
More than 440,000 HiLux 4×4 variants have been bought locally while the 4×2 total is close to 360,000 vehicles.
The popularity of HiLux among Australian buyers has gained pace over the years with annual sales reaching 20,000 for the first time in 1998, passing 30,000 in 2005 and cracking 40,000 in 2007.
During the past 30 years, HiLux has averaged more than 24,000 sales a year, rising to 37,600 a year for the past decade and 39,000 a year over the past five years.
